What is a dual-service boiler?
Simply a boiler that fulfills two functions, namely heating and hot water production.
This type of boiler is becoming more and more common, as it is an economical and practical equipment at a time.
This is even more true that the dual-service boilers have in recent years many improvements that allow them to be very efficient while being compact, which is ideal in a small housing.

The different types of dual-service boilers
Dual-service boilers for heating and hot water production can run on oil, gas, electricity and wood. The current models are presented as a concentrate of technology that offers a real comfort of use.
There are different types of boilers, depending on their production mode of the ECS. We will distinguish:
The instantaneous boiler: the hot water is produced only on demand; it does not have a storage tank.
The mini-or micro-accumulation boiler: a basic amount of domestic hot water is stored permanently, which makes it possible to have DHW without heating delay.
In micro-accumulation boilers, the available quantity is less than one liter (this is only the water in the heating element), whereas, in mini-accumulation boilers, the user has a hot water reserve of 2 to 10 liters.
The storage boiler is connected to a hot water tank, to be selected according to the number of people in the household, between 50 liters per person up to 250 liters for families of 3 children.
Last innovation: the hybrid design boiler, which has a storage tank, but only uses it in the case of a large draw, while it operates in instant mode for small, occasional draws.
Did you know…?
Replacing an oil-fired boiler with a wood boiler will allow you to receive a Coup de Pouce bonus of € 2,000 if you belong to the category of low-income households and € 3,000 if you belong to the category of very modest income households.
Advantages and disadvantages of the dual-service boiler
The advantages and disadvantages of this type of heating and DHW equipment depend on the type of boiler service you choose.
Thus, instant boilers are only suitable for small households. The burner ignites with each hot water draw; the equipment is therefore more solicited.
The same goes for micro or even mini accumulation, since there is a slight delay in production, and therefore an expectation of having hot water.
The temperature is not necessarily constant during a large draw, for a shower or a bath.
Boilers with a hot water tank offer increased comfort, as the fireplace always has a large supply of hot water.
This comfort however has a cost, the boiler must maintain the temperature of the flask (measured via a probe), even when the DHW is not used, which requires energy consumption.
The double service boiler
Rates, installation and maintenance of the dual-service boiler
Maintenance of the dual-service boiler
Like all heating equipment, the dual-service boiler must be serviced once a year by a professional.
The price of the annual contract or maintenance package must be taken into account when evaluating the cost of the boiler.
The professional cleans the equipment and checks the correct functioning of the parts, as well as evacuations. Count around 120-150 euros for a gas boiler.
Purchase and installation of a mixed boiler
The prices vary depending on the model and the power of the boiler, but also depending on whether it is equipment with or without a hot water tank.
For new boilers, entry-level models may still have low-temperature technology, while the condensing boiler tends to become the norm, because of the energy savings it allows.
Instant low-energy boilers are available for less than 1000 euros. The best models can go up to more than 10,000 euros. The consumer therefore has an interest in properly assessing his needs, to acquire a boiler in the right price range.
Hybrid and hybrid technologies: an option to study
Riding the wave of energy savings and renewable energies, as well as the requirements of RT 2012, hybrid boilers are based on the same principle as the hybrid car: they can operate thanks to two sources of energy, gas and solar, wood and solar, or wood and fuel oil.
Count between 5,000 euros and 35,000 euros for equipment.
What does “boiler trend” mean?
An efficient, robust, economical boiler, whose fuel is economical and respectful of the environment.
Choosing a new boiler for your home is an important decision: heating represents on average 62% of energy expenditure in French households, and hot water, 11%.
A wise choice can therefore help you drastically reduce the heating bill for your home.
But in the category “gas boiler”, what to choose between a conventional gas boiler, a low temperature boiler and a condensing boiler?
